By News No Comments

We are proud to introduce to new members of our volunteer Board of Directors.

Jessica Barlcay

Jess Barclay KidzFirst Candaa

Jessica Barclay grew up in North Delta, British Columbia. She played competitive softball throughout her youth and received a scholarship to play at the University of Detroit Mercy. After a year in Detroit, Jessica returned to Vancouver and attended UBC where she was a member of the very first UBC varsity women’s softball team. She received a Bachelor of Human Kinetics in Kinesiology and Health Sciences and a Master’s of Science in Speech-Language Pathology at UBC.

Since 2017, Jessica has worked as a speech-language pathologist (S-LP) with all populations (birth to adult) with a variety of communication needs. She continues to participate in recreational and semi-competitive sport. What she enjoys most about her work and personal life is the connections that she builds with others. Jessica feels that communication, connection and participation in one’s community are integral to one’s self-worth and self-identity. Further, as the youngest of four and an auntie to six, Jessica strongly values family, friendships and teamwork. She is thrilled to be able to share these values, and her passion for people as a new board member of KidzFirst Canada!

KidzFirst Canada Partners With #MakeItAwkward

By Events, Make It Awkward, News No Comments

KidzFirst Canada is proud to be partnering with the #MakeItAwkward Team and the Make it Awkward Inclusivity Summit  This partnership came about due to the 20 + year friendship between KidzFirst Canada Founder & Board Chair Mark Mahl, and the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the the Make It Awkward movement, Jesse Lipscombe.

Almost 2 years ago Jesse was filming a public service announcement for the City of Edmonton when he was confronted with profane racial slurs. Jesse chose to reach out through the power of understanding, love and support to have our communities speak up, empower each other, and teach the importance of forgiveness and tolerance. Every day our young people are at-risk & vulnerable in their communities, schools, neighbourhoods, and peer surroundings.

The Make it Awkward Inclusivity Summit takes place February 1 – 3rd, 2018 in Edmonton, Alberta. The Summit will bring together global leaders championing inclusivity, diversity, and love. It will seek to empower participants to become ambassadors of change in their homes, workplaces, communities.

Day 1 and 2 of the event will focus on ways adults can help, but the Day 3 Youth Summit is all about the kids, the leaders of tomorrow!

KidzFirst Canada Donates $500 to Families Branching Out Christmas Dinner

Last night KidzFirst Canada decided to make a Christmas donation to the Families Branching Out community Christmas dinner. Families Branching Out runs out of the Collingwood Neighbourhood House and is for parents, grandparents, and caregivers of young children (from 0 – 6 years old). The focus is on the health and well-being of young children, their families, and the relationship of families to their community. Children and parents can make new friends. Parents share resources, parenting skills, and child-minding and also learn positive ways to support each other.

Families Branching Out receives Christmas donation from KidzFirst Canada

Every Monday evening a delicious dinner is cooked by parents and youth and served to Families Branching Out members. The program, which, specifically welcomes low income families, Aboriginal families, and new-comer families, has grown in the last two years from 25-40 participants per session to 60-70 participants!

Last year the Families Branching Out  Christmas dinner was huge success with Mr. and Mrs. Claus in attendance! They had well over 100 children and parents, and with the help of donations were able to feed everybody!  They had 6 turkeys and 5 hams, a big chocolate cake, and Christmas hampers for low income families. The Community Police Centre donated lovely gifts for over 70 children. For the children involved it was a magical evening.
