Many Dancers Lost Uniforms in Fort McMurray Forest Fire
KidzFirst Canada is please to announce another donation! The board members provided a $1000 donation to Fort McMurray’s McDonald Island Dance Academy. They were driven out of their homes, community & city by the wild fires but have still managed to attend their competition this weekend in Camrose, AB. Here is a small clip from their coach. Thank you to Jeremy for bringing this to our attention.
First off I want to thank you both for the amazing support you have shown our dance team. As you are aware our team of 66 dancers have been displaced due to the fire in Fort McMurray. We had planned to compete in a dance competition this weekend (our final one of the year) and with the evacuation thought we wouldn’t have an opportunity. Many of our team members evacuated without costumes and unfortunately some lost their houses and costumes in the fire.
Your financial support helped us to purchase costumes for all our hip hop teams and allowed us to still compete. Words cannot describe the feeling of thanks each of the parents have for this opportunity. When we left the fire my daughter was in tears thinking dance was over and that her gramma never got to see her dance this year. With the opportunity to compete this weekend her gramma decided to fly out and she was incredibly excited.
We are competing in the catch a rising star Nova dance competition in Camrose. Today our teams did phenomenal and we compete again tomorrow. We are also being interviewed by CBC television to talk about the support we received from everyone to assist us with this opportunity.
Again I can’t thank you enough…it’s people/organizations like yourselves that have made this horrible situation into something positive.
Thank you so much,
MacDonald Island Dance Academy
